Question: A new drug has been developed that may have some protective benefits against development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by women at genetic risk for developing the disorder. In a 20-year study, a large group of at-risk women receive either the new drug or a placebo, and at the end of the study, whether or not they have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s is determined. Of the 253 women receiving the drug, 10 have AD by the end of the study; of the 228 women receiving the placebo, 23 are diagnosed with AD. Is the new drug beneficial?
