Module 02 - Session Long Project
Descriptive Statistics
The data file will be the same with that in the module1.
Descriptive statistics can be used for checking data integrity and providing measures of central tendency and variability of the mean. SPSS also offers graphing procedures, which allow you to visually inspect your data for errors/problems and provide you with a visual snapshot of your results. Scatter Plots can be used to display the correlation between variables. Bar Graphs allow you to show the distribution of cases into particular categories. Boxplot will show extreme numbers.
In this module, you need
- . To show descriptive data of reading, math and total scores by gender.
- . Are they (reading, math and total scores) normally distributed?
- . To check relationship between reading and math scores with scatter plot, is that linear related?
- . To demonstrate the collapsed self-esteem score (esteem2) for men and women with bar graph.
- To check whether there are extreme data in reading and math scores.
After you have the SPSS output, please use a paragraph to interpret the results. It includes general data report, summary of data results.
SPSS Hints:
- For descriptive statistics. Go to Analyze-->descriptive statistics-->explore.
- For normality. Go to Analyze-->descriptive statistics-->Frequencies, drag variable to "variables", click " charts", select "Histogram and with normal curve", click "continue", "Statistics", select "mean, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis", click "continue", "OK".
- For scatter plot. Graphs-->Scatter-->Simple scatter
- For Bar graph. Graphs-->Bar--> highlight Clustered, click Define-->Put esteem2 in "category Axis", and put gender in "define clusters by"
- For Boxplot. Graphs-->boxplot--> highlight "Simple", select " summaries of separate variables, click Define-->drag reading and math into "Boxes request"-->OK.
You need to submit your SLP2 by the end of module2.
