Case Overview
Your previous study was a hit! The chairperson of the granting institution was quite impressed with your level of statistical expertise, as well as your scholarly writing style / abilities - per the research report submitted. The findings will indeed make a meaningful contribution to this area of research - in practice and in theory! As the chairperson is praising your previous study, you inform here that you have another study you would like to propose - one in which uses a different type of t-test - & will indeed make a most meaningful contribution to the research literature - as well as have important implications for practice! Of course, you are given the green light to conduct this next study - which will entail a different type of t-test -either a paired samples or independent samples t-test - one in which your previous study did not entail. This study is again one in which you are even more excited about - AND here you are with ample financial backing to get moving with your follow-up study. As the chairperson confirmed, the board will expect a similar report from you - reporting on the result of this next analysis - in the same manner as your first report. Hence, you pull out the award letter once again & carefully read over the specifications - specifying exactly what the granting institution expects from you - in return for the funding provided. To Submit As indicated in the award letter, you are to prepare a report similar to the report you prepared for your previous study - detailing the following items:
1. You are to use SPSS to conduct your t-test analyses. 2. For the purpose of your project only, your n size can be as low as 60 - i.e., n = 60. 3. You are NOT to copy & paste SPSS tables into your report. 4. Rather, you are to report your findings via APA formatted tables and corresponding narrative. |

GETTING STARTED / HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS
FIRST : Revisit the background readings and web-resources provided for you on the Background Information page in the previous module. If you would like additional background materials on this type of statistical analysis - i.e., paired sample t-test & independent sample t-test - simply type in the specific type of t-test into any search engine - giving you an array of excellent resources to peruse. Of course, if you would like further guidance - drop me an email - I'll give you a few more to choose from. NEXT : Once you have a solid grasp of these two types of t-tests, consider a specific research question for each type - either hypothetical / fictitious OR realistic / actual. Consider the type of data you are looking at - per your research variables. THEN : Generate a data set with an n size of 60 (i.e., n= 60; 30 subjects per group) via an SPSS file. FINALLY : Analyze your data set via the appropriate SPSS procedures - i.e., paired samples OR independent samples t-test. TO SUBMIT: As indicated above, interpret your findings via a 3-4 page report - reporting the pertinent findings in a manner that would be suitable for publication considerations in a peer-reviewed research journal. Per the above specifications, your report is to consist of three sections -(a) INTRODUCTION, (b) METHODOLOGY, & (c) RESULTS & CONCLUDING DISCUSSION -detailing the items delineated above. |
