Analysis of the Means: Paired Samples & Independent Sample T-Test Part I |
|
Case Overview
You have just been awarded a substantial research grant to fund a research project you had proposed just a short time ago. Your research project is one in which entailed a t-test analyses - either a one-sample or two-sample t-test - with either a paired samples or independent samples t-test - going the two-sample route*. The study you proposed addresses a research topic / issue that you have been most excited about. Now, here you are - with more than enough financial backing to finally move forward with your research study! Toward this end, you carefully read over the award letter - indicating exactly what the granting institution expects from you - in return for the funding provided. *[ You have a lot on your mind, hence, not quite sure which type you proposed in your grant write-up] To Submit As indicted in the award letter, you will be expected to prepare a research report for the granting institution detailing the following items:
2. METHODOLOGY
3. RESULTS & CONCLUDING DISCUSSION
1. You are to use SPSS to conduct your t-test analyses. 2. For the purpose of your project only, your n size can be as low as 60 - i.e., n = 60. 3. You are NOT to copy & paste SPSS tables into your report. 4. Rather, you are to report your findings via APA formatted tables and corresponding narrative. |

GETTING STARTED / HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS
FIRST : Revisit the background readings and web-resources provided for you on the Background Information page in the previous module. If you would like additional background materials on this type of statistical analysis - i.e., paired sample t-test & independent sample t-test - simply type in the specific type of t-test into any search engine - giving you an array of excellent resources to peruse. Of course, if you would like further guidance - drop me an email - I'll give you a few more to choose from. NEXT : Once you have a solid grasp of these two types of t-tests, consider a specific research question for each type - either hypothetical / fictitious OR realistic / actual. Consider the type of data you are looking at - per your research variables. THEN : Generate a data set with an n size of 60 (i.e., n= 60; 30 subjects per group) via an SPSS file. FINALLY : Analyze your data set via the appropriate SPSS procedures - i.e., paired samples OR independent samples t-test. TO SUBMIT: As indicated above, interpret your findings via a 3-4 page report - reporting the pertinent findings in a manner that would be suitable for publication considerations in a peer-reviewed research journal. Per the above specifications, your report is to consist of three sections -(a) INTRODUCTION, (b) METHODOLOGY, & (c) RESULTS & CONCLUDING DISCUSSION -detailing the items delineated above. |
