What is the major distinction between the Pearson and Spearman correlations? Problem 13: A common concern
Problem 11: What is the major distinction between the Pearson and Spearman correlations?
Problem 13: A common concern for students (and teachers) is the assignment of grades for essays or term papers. Because there are no absolute right or wrong answers, these grades must be based on a judgment of quality. To demonstrate that these judgments actually are reliable, an English instructor asked a colleague to rank-order a set of term papers. The ranks and the instructor's grades for these papers are as follows:
- Calculate the Spearman correlation for these data. (Note: You must convert the letter grades to ranks.)
- Based on this correlation, does it appear that there is reasonable agreement between these two instructors in their judgment of the papers?
Problem 14: To test the effectiveness of a new studying strategy, a psychologist randomly divides a sample of 8 students into two groups, with \(n=4\) in each group. The students in one group receive training in the new studying strategy. Then all students are given 30 minutes to study a chapter from a history textbook before they take a quiz on the chapter. The quiz scores for the two groups are as follows:
- Convert these data into a form suitable for the point-biserial correlation. (Use \(X=1\) for training, \(X=0\) for no training, and the quiz score for \(Y\).)
- Calculate the point-biserial correlation for these data.
SPSS Assignment 1
Enter Data for number 12 into an SPSS Data spreadsheet and analyze the data using the Spearman-Rho correlation. Copy or copy object and past relevant output from the statistical tests. Write a one-paragraph analysis of the output which assesses the relationship between x and y.
SPSS Assignment 2
(1) Enter the following data in an SPSS Data spreadsheet. Be sure to insert your variable labels and names. Analyze the relationship between class rank and GPA for the second grading period of school.
Student Class Rank GPA
John 1 3.75
Marcia 3 3.2
Renee 6 3.0
Joshua 8 2.75
Frank 4 3.0
Michael 9 2.75
Thomas 2 3.89
Maria 5 3.0
Jane 10 2.66
Marilyn 7 3.0
(2) Copy or copy object and paste relevant output from the statistical tests.
(3) Write a one-paragraph analysis of the output which assesses whether or not there is a relationship between student class rank and GPA.
