Assignment 11 – Combining Lean and Green Practices

The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) describes Lean Manufacturing as: "A systematic approach to identifying and eliminating waste through continuous improvement, flowing the product at the pull of the customer in pursuit of perfection." Essentially, Lean Manufacturing combines JIT and TQM into a single improvement program. Lean Manufacturing is made up of the following eight sets of practices:

  1. Lean Practices Related to Suppliers
  2. Lean Practices Related to Customers
  3. Lean Practices Related to Pull Production System
  4. Lean Practices Related to Continuous Flow
  5. Lean Practices Related to Setup
  6. Lean Practices Related to Statistical Process Control
  7. Lean Practices Related to Employee Involvement
  8. Lean Practices Related to Preventive Maintenance

Let’s see how the Lean Manufacturing improvement program combines with the Green Supply Chain Management Practices to impact environmental and operational performance. Complete the path analysis (two multiple regressions and one simple regression) and answer the following questions:

  1. What percentage of the variation in OPER PERF is explained by LEAN, GREEN, and ENV PERF combined?
  2. What percentage of the variation in ENV PERF is explained by LEAN and GREEN combined?
  3. What percentage of the variation in GREEN is explained by LEAN?
  4. Does LEAN directly impact OPER PERF?
  5. Does ENV PERF directly impact OPER PERF?
  6. Does GREEN directly impact OPER PERF?
  7. Does LEAN directly impact ENV PERF?
  8. Does GREEN directly impact ENV PERF?
  9. Does LEAN directly impact GREEN?
  10. Does LEAN indirectly impact OPER PERF through ENV PERF?
  11. Does LEAN indirectly impact OPER PERF through GREEN?
  12. Does GREEN indirectly impact OPER PERF through ENV PERF?
  13. Summarize the results from questions 1-12 to answer the research question: Do Lean and Green improvement programs combine to improve both environmental and operational performance in a manufacturing setting? Based on your answer to the research question, what advice do you have for manufacturing managers striving to improve both environmental and operational performance?
  14. Explain why Lean Practices should support environmental sustainability efforts. In your answer tie Lean Practices to environmental performance. If you implement Lean Practices, why should your organization’s environmental performance improve (even without implementing GSCMP)?
