Question: A study is conducted to investigate the ability of monocytes to kill certain yeast cells found in patients with cirrhosis of the liver. These cells are harmful in that they leave the patient open to recurrent infections of various sorts. Blood samples are taken from a simple random sample of 25 cirrhosis patients and a simple random sample of 25 healthy individuals (controls). The percentage of yeast cells killed by monocytes is recorded from each blood sample. The results are stored in the data file MONOCYTES.
