Question: Doctor Art Longarm, the head of the Prescott Memorial Hospital is again worried about the possible expansion of Universal Hospital Company of the United States ( UHCUS ) into the county. His million dollar bonus looks on shaky ground about now. He knows that UHCUS cites savings to patients in its HMO’s where ever it operates.

Doc Longarm is trying to find out if UHCUS is actually cheaper than non-HMOs in the long run. He has gathered information about four locations where UHCUS has HMOs, and four similar cities without these HMOs. Follow the instructions on the next slide to help the Doc out with his analysis. The data below is the per capita costs for the four cities with UHCUS HMOs and for comparable cities. First, develop your null and research hypotheses.

Second, use POLYSTAT to run a simple regression and find out if the costs are the same or different. Lastly, let Doc Longarm know if he is in trouble with his sailboat sailing off into the sunset without him.
