Validity Analysis

The Perceived Autonomy in Teaching (PAT, Mittag, Backes, Bieg, & Runge, 2010) is comprised of four scales that measure different aspects of motivation for teaching: external, introjected, identified, and intrinsic motivation. The scales present situations reflective of typical tasks in a teacher´s job, each of which is followed by four responses representing the four types of motivation. The respondent is asked to indicate, on a four-point scale of 0 to 3 the degree to which she or he agrees with the statement, with 0 indicating "not at all" and 4 indicating "very true." The subscale intrinsic motivation is comprised of five items appearing in the measure as the responses that most represent this construct. The latent construct of enjoyment of teaching is the basis of the five responses measuring intrinsic motivation.. For example, the response that aligns with the intrinsic motivation subscale for the question "I’m looking for interesting topics, because…" is "…then teaching is more fun for me" (p. Bieg, Backes, & Mittag, p. 128).

From the standpoint of self-determination theory, intrinsic motivation is one of two types of motivations defined by Ryan and Deci (2000) that bring about an action. According to these authors, intrinsic motivation leads a person to engage in a certain action because it is inherently interesting or enjoyable, as opposed to extrinsic motivation, by which an actor does something because of a separable outcome it produces. The latent construct related to intrinsic motivation measured by the PAT inventory corresponds to one of the two common approaches to measuring intrinsic motivation discussed by Ryan and Deci (2000), which is that of interest and enjoyment of the activity per se. The other common approach, which is more often used by experimental studies, is to conceive of intrinsic motivation in terms of the latent construct of free choice, in which a participant in a study is asked to engage in a task, and then told after a period of time that she or he does not have to continue engaging in the task, but may do so if she or he wishes.
