Data Analysis – Unit 9

Introduction

The main purpose of this paper is to determine the significance of the effect of passenger class on survival on a crash. In order to assess such effect various non-parametric tests will be conducted, including the Chi-Square test of independence.

Description of the Dataset

The dataset used for the analysis has two variables. First of all, the dependent variable (DV) is the variable Saved (with values Saved = 1, Lost =2, measured at the nominal level). On the other hand, the independent variable is Passenger Class (First Class = 1, Third Class = 2, measured at the ordinal level). The size of the sample used is n = 309.

Testing Assumptions

The Chi-Square of Independence needs to have the following assumption met: all the expected counts are at least 5 (so that normal approximation can be used). Table 1 below contains all the corresponding expected counts.
