SPSS Assignment
For this assignment students will have to enter the data (attached) in a SPSS 18 file. The data will need to be properly coded, re-coded if necessary, and a set of elementary analyses performed which address a key criminological issues: is low self control the cause of criminal behavior?
- Properly code and provide variable names and value labels for each variable.
- All tables in the assignment must have titles.
- Run a frequency distribution for each variable (as they appear in the analysis). This will show how each variable was coded/recoded.
- Run an appropriate bi-variate (cross-tabular) analysis for the relevant IV’s and DV’s that would test the main hypotheses associated with each perspective. Even though the numbers of cases are relatively small, tests of statistical significance are required in your analysis (chi-square)
- Be sure to properly recode the variables so that they can be presented in a reasonable tabular format. Each table should not contain more than 4 rows and 4 columns and will be inserted in the findings section of assignment. Each cell should contain 2 numbers (a row or column percentage and an "n")
- Perform a cross tabular 3 variable analysis to see if low self control as a child has an impact on offending in adulthood, controlling 2 variables that are relevant to the life course perspective.
- Interpret your results in a style which is similar to how articles in scholarly journals report the results of statistical analysis. Be careful when interpreting your results in terms using of using column or row percentages.
Perspective 1 ( G eneral T heory of C rime) : imprudent and criminal behaviors can be predicted by a common characteristic: lack of self-control
Perspective 2 (Life C ourse P erspective) : both continuity and change exist throughout the life-course and that modifications in individual behavior may occur through new experiences or social circumstances.
