Project Outline:

  1. Pick a survey topic that can be approached by asking people in your surrounding (students, coworkers, neighbors, etc) Identify and explain the targeted population. You must survey at least 30 people. Try to think of a real purpose. When you present and discuss the data you collected, the reader will be able to tell if you show and interest in your findings.
  2. Your survey must contain 2 questions:
    1. 1 question that have a qualitative (word) response
    2. 1 question that have a quantitative (numerical) response.
  3. You must get your instructor to approve the survey.
  4. Compile the data (see requirements listed in #6)
  5. Submit each item requested in #6
  6. Display and analyze the data using EXCEL or another technology tool of you choice.
  1. For the set of qualitative data
    1. Make a frequency table showing the different responses and the frequencies.
    2. Create both a pie chart and a Pareto chart
    3. Find the mode.
  2. For the set of quantitative data
    1. List the data ordered from smallest to largest (you must use EXCEL or another similar software package, just type the responses for each question unordered in a new spreadsheet and highlight the numbers. Use the "sort" button to bring the entries in order( the "sort" button shows an A on the top and a Z underneath and an arrow pointing down.)
    2. Calculate the mean, median, midrange, mode, range, standard deviation.
    3. Using EXCEL, draw a histogram using between 5 and 10 classes. Discuss your findings by describing the graph and/or point out any interesting features. Compare the displayed data to what you expected to see. Since you were doing this survey with a purpose in mind, state your conclusions by reflecting on what you see in the histogram.

7. Write an overall conclusion. This should include but is not limited to the following points:

  1. Do you think you obtained results that were representative about the whole population from this sample? Why or why not?
  2. What was interesting about this project?
  3. If you had to do it over again, what would you do differently (ie. Would you ask the same questions? Would you pick a different data set for the histograms, etc)
