LESSON 26

Exercises 1 through 4 are based on the following research problem. The data are in the file labeled Exercise File l on the Web at http://www.prenhall.com/greensalkind.

An experimenter wanted to investigate simultaneously the effects of two types of reinforcement schedules and three types of reinforces on the arithmetic problem-solving performance of second-grade students. A sample of 66 second graders was identified, and 11 were randomly assigned to each of the six combinations of reinforcement schedules and reinforces. Students studied arithmetic problem solving under these six conditions for three weeks, and then took a test on the material they studied. The SPSS data file includes 66 cases and three variables: a factor distinguishing between the two types of reinforcement schedules (random or spaced), a second factor distinguishing among three types of reinforces (token, money, or food), and the dependent variable, an arithmetic problem-solving test.

Conduct a two-way ANOVA to analyze these data.

  1. Identify the following information from the output:
    1. F value for the schedule main effect
    2. Mean GPA dependent variable score for the cell associated with the random schedule and the money reinforcer
    3. Effect size for the interaction effect
    4. p value for the reinforcer type main effect
  2. What follow-up tests would you conduct? Why?
  3. Write a Results section based on your output.
  4. Create a boxplot to visually represent the interaction between schedule type and reinforcer type on test scores.
