QUESTIONS Your model is going to explain the DV Level of prejudice toward Hispanics with the following

QUESTIONS

  1. Your model is going to explain the DV Level of prejudice toward Hispanics with the following IDVs: ( Important: see measures below ) a) Favors Hispanics
    b) Favors immigrants c) Contact with Hispanics d) Being white (compared to being any type of minority) Write a research question relevant to this model.
  2. Nominally define the DV Level of prejudice toward Hispanics , and explain its importance.
  3. Write specific hypotheses for the relationships between each IDV and the DV. Justify each hypothesis theoretically: why and how would each IDV affect the DV?
  4. The IDV Contact with Hispanics denotes the percentage of Hispanics residing in the congressional district in which the survey respondent lives (data from US Census Bureau). Explain how this variable can be empirically validated, building on Adcock & Collier, and give two concrete examples of convergent, discriminant or construct validation (e.g. one example for convergent and one for discriminant).
  5. See output 1 (part 1 of output on BB) for the linear regression results. Interpret the results substantively, including the constant, the slopes and their corresponding significance for each IDV ( for the dummy variable, please write down the two equations and interpret its effect accordingly), the beta weights, and
the goodness of fit (R• and F). Based on the regression what can you conclude regarding your hypotheses?
  6. Explain the assumptions of (a) No Multicollinearity (b) Homoscedasticity and (c) Error normality, and provide empirical evidence for whether or not they were violated in your regression model, and if so- how they could be corrected . Please fully interpret all relevant graphs and statistics.
  7. Suppose that instead of additivity, you conjectured that the impact of the evaluation of Hispanics on prejudice toward Hispanics is conditional on whether or not the respondent is white or a minority (in other words, you suspect there is an interaction between hispthrm and white ). See output 2 (part 2 of output on BB), with the interactive regression models testing this proposition. Interpret the results of the interaction substantively, focus on the effects—i.e. coefficients, significance, nature of the r/s with the DV—of hispthrm , white and the interaction among them. Write down the regression equations. Is the relationship of evaluation of Hispanics with prejudice toward Hispanics conditional on being white? How (i.e., what is the effect of evaluation of Hispanics on prejudice toward Hispanics among whites, and what is the r/s among minorities)? Why? – I.e. did you expect this result? How can you explain it theoretically? * Remember that to see the slope and significance of evaluation of Hispanics among whites and minorities we needed to have two versions of ethnicity (one when whites =0 and one when minorities =0), construct two interactive terms (one with the dummy variable where whites =0 and one with the dummy variable
where minorities =0), and run the regression twice—once with each version of ethnicity and the corresponding interactive term.
  8. Your friend visited to Union Square a couple of days before the elections this November, and noticed that many New Yorkers wear Obama’s campaign button. She was wondering who are the type of people who wear these buttons, so she stopped people on the street, some of them wearing and some not wearing buttons, asked them a couple of questions about themselves, and wrote down the answers. After interviewing 128 people she went back home and run the following OLS regression, with 3 IDV’s:

DV: Wearing Obama’s campaign button: 1=wearing it, 0=not

IDV1: Ideology: extreme liberal=7, extreme conservative=1

IDV2: Ethnicity: 1=White, 2=Hispanic 3=African American, 4=other

IDV3: Interaction between religiosity and ethnicity: a multiplication between a 4 point scale of religiosity (1=secular, 4=orthodox) and a dummy of Gender (1=female, 2=male ethnicity)

However, there are several problems with this model specification.

Describe three problems in this model, and explain what would be the proper specification in each case.
