Introduction to Statistics Project #1
Part 1 :
The following data show ages of winners of Best Actor and Best Actress Oscar winners.
Actor: 32 51 33 61 35 45 55 39 76 37 42 40 32 60 38
56 48 48 40 43 62 43 42 44 41 56 39 46 31 47
Actress: 80 26 41 21 61 38 49 33 74 30 33 41 31 35 41
- 37 26 34 34 35 26 61 60 34 24 30 37 31 27
- Find the mean and median of the Best Actor ages.
- Find the range, 1 st quartile, third quartile and standard deviation of the Best Actor.
- Make back-to-back stemplots to compare the data sets. What, if any, conclusions can you draw?
- Make two boxplots to compare the data sets. What, if any, conclusions can you draw?
- Are there any outliers in either data set?
- For the Best Actor ages, what percent of the data fall within one standard deviation of the mean? Two standard deviations? Three standard deviations? (don’t assume a normal distribution)
- Write a short paragraph to summarize your analysis and understanding of the distribution of the data.
Part 2:
For this part of the project you will need to access the National Vital Statistics Report found in a subfolder within the Project 1 folder under "lessons" on the WAOL Angel course website. Use the preliminary data for 2007 in this report to answer the following questions:
- In what percent of the total number of live births was the birth mother American Indian or Alaskan Native?
- In what percent of the total number of live births was the birth mother Black and it was her 3 rd child?
- What percent of the children that were the 3 rd child, born to White mothers?
- Of the mothers that were 40-44 years old, what percent had 3 or more children?
- Construct a bar graph for the number of live births by age interval.
- Construct a histogram for the birth rates for the states and the U.S. territories.
- Construct a segmented bar graph to compare the birth distributions by age interval for each race designation ( i.e. Non-Hispanic white, Non-Hispanic Black, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, Hispanic). Are the age distributions the same for each race designation?
