Introduction to Statistics

Project #1

Consider the following case study:

Is Your Water Safe?

New York (Aug. 12): Nearly three decades after Congress passed the Safe Drinking Water Act, the water coming from a faucet may contain contaminants and impurities. One in six people drink water with excessive amounts of lead, a heavy metal that impairs children’s I.Q. attention span, and raises blood pressure levels.

Recently, the EPA stated that lead levels in the tap in many Northeastern cities ( New York , Boston ) are excessive. In New York alone, the water quality of 20 ppb (parts per billion) of lead far exceeds the safe action level of 15 ppb. Drinking water contributes about 10 to 20% of the total lead exposure of children according to the EPA.

A July 2010 survey conducted by the EPA of 60 systems in the New York City and Long Island areas disclosed the following lead levels (in ppb):

22 17 24 29 23 22 23 19 20 22 22 23

17 19 20 26 22 20 24 18 18 19 23 18

18 24 18 31 27 19 28 15 17 16 18 19

25 22 15 29 21 28 20 14 26 18 23 22

32 30 19 27 20 21 18 16 25 21 21 17

Using the above data, construct the following using a computer:

  1. A summary of the case study article; which includes a paragraph using complete sentences. (worth 10 points)
  2. A frequency distribution (use 10 classes), which includes the class limits, tally marks, frequency, and relative frequency. (worth 20 points)
  3. A histogram (worth 20 points)
  4. A relative frequency histogram (worth 20 points)
  5. A stem-and-leaf plot (worth 20 points)
  6. Write a complete paragraph explaining which graph best illustrates the main point of the case study article using 12-pt. lettering; the font is up to you as long it is readable. (worth 10 points)

Neatness is of extreme importance, and creativity is unlimited.
