Problem description : The article "Characterization of Bearing Strength Factors in Pegged Timber Connections, " (Journal of Structural Engineering, 1997: 326-332) took samples of joint specimens constructed using two types of wood: red oak and Douglas fir. Data was collected on the proportional stress limits \((\mathrm{MPa})\) and is displayed below:
| Red Oak | Douglas Fir |
| 9.31 | 7.9 |
| 8.82 | 6.89 |
| 8.24 | 7.14 |
| 10.34 | 8.07 |
| 9.51 | 7.89 |
| 8.12 | 6.79 |
| 9.15 | 5.25 |
| 7.45 | 5.32 |
| 8.62 | 4.47 |
| 8.32 | 4.73 |
| 9.44 | |
| 9.19 | |
| 8.56 | |
| 8.49 |
TABLE 1. The proportional stress limits (MPa) for joint specimens constructed using red oak and Douglas fir.
Goal: Decide whether the true average proportional stress limit for red oak differs from Douglas fir joints. Provide a recommendation of which would you believe is preferred.
Instructions: This mini project is to be done in teams of at most 4, with any deviation from this number requiring explicit prior approval of your instructor. It is to result in a thorough but concise, professional quality executive summary of the appropriate statistical analysis not to exceed 2 typed pages, excluding figures and appendices. Your statistical analysis should include the following:
- a brief description of each set of measurements
- a statement of the appropriate hypotheses
-
verification/justification of the necessary assumptions for inference method used
- normally distributed data
- independent groups (if appropriate)
- equal variances (if appropriate) - details of the statistical procedure
- a conclusion within the context of the problem
Simply attaching computer printout is not what is meant by including appropriate statistical analysis! The report should contain only the end products of any statistical calculations (but your calculations should be included in an appendix so your reader can see how your end products were produced). Any appendices should be referred to explicitly in the text (don't leave the reader guessing why appendix material is included).
Deliverable: Word Document
