The first step in order to proceed with a multiple regression analysis to find the association between "complexity" and "beauty" is to operationalize those variables. For each type of painting, a scale will be constructed by adding the corresponding Likert-type items (Painting 1-8 =abstract, Painting 9-16 = representational). This approach is necessary in order to construct at least the variable Beauty , which will be the dependent variable (DV) for the regression model, and as the regression model requires, the DV needs to be valid scale variable. The difficulty with this approach is that the beauty and complexity constructs are not totally valid, considering that the corresponding Cronbach’s Alpha’s are less than 0.7, as shown in Tables 1 through 4 below.

The reliability coefficients found, even though they are not ideal (they are all less than 0.7), are of moderate strength and it is a judgment call to use the scales constructed as valid scales.
