Case Study Four
Crime data comparison between states
This week, we studied how to compare data for both dependent and independent samples. For this case study, you are going to play two roles. First, you will be a statistician and perform a comparison of the data. Then you will play the role of "The Media" and report whether one state is "more dangerous" than the other for one particular crime.
Your Assignment – data calculation
On the course website, you can find the data for seven crimes for both Ohio and Michigan for each year from 1960 and 2000. With this data, you are to do the following:
- Choose one of the seven listed crimes: murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny theft or vehicle theft. It must be the same crime for both states.
- Using the data for your crime chosen in Part 1, chose the correct statistical test from this week and perform the calculations to determine the true difference in the per capita crime rate. Use a 95% confidence interval.
Your Assignment – reporting your findings
When all calculations and comparisons from the previous section are complete, you are to report your findings in a three-paragraph summary. This summary should not detail your method of calculations, rather it should report and interpret your calculations and what they mean.
Deliverable: Word Document
