- We want to determine whether education (educ) -coded as 0=No HS diploma 1=HS diploma or more- has an effect on whether a respondent has substantial drug consumption (druguse) - coded as 0=No 1=Yes- or not.
- State the null and alternative hypotheses.
- Run a Chi-Square test, including the corresponding nonparametric test of association
(hint: to decide which test to association to select first determine the level of measurement of your variables (nominal x nominal, ordinal x ordinal, nominal x ordinal) and then determine the size of the table (2x2, 3x2, 2x3, etc.).
Report:
- Paste the Bar Chart displaying the distribution of the dependent variable given the independent variable.
- Is there a significant relationship between education and substantial drug consumption? Write a paragraph reporting the corresponding statistics.
- If there is a significant relationship between the two variables, how strong is this relationship? Write a paragraph reporting the corresponding statistics.
-
Write a short paragraph reporting the most salient percentages from the cross - tabulation.
c. Write a paragraph interpreting your results (i.e., why are we getting these results? Come up with a short theory to explain the findings).
2. We want to determine whether there is a relationship between monthly legitimate income (leg $) and monthly criminal income (crim$).- State null and alternative hypotheses.
- Run and paste a scatterplot displaying the relationship between the 2 variables, including the best-fitting line. (Use legitimate income as your independent variable (x) and criminal income as your dependent variable (y)).
- Run a Pearson’s r between the two variables:
- Is there a significant relationship between legitimate and criminal income? Write a couple of sentences reporting relevant statistics.
- What are the direction and strength of the relationship? Write a couple of sentences.
- What percentage of the variance of criminal income is explained by legitimate income? Write a sentence reporting relevant statistics.
-
In a paragraph, provide an interpretation for these results (i.e. why do you think we found what we found?)
3. We wanted to determine whether there would be a difference in the average number of residences during the last year free among people with different racial backgrounds:
a. State the null and alternative hypotheses.
We run a One-way ANOVA to test this research question. The following are the results:
b. Is the equality of variances assumptions met? Write a couple of sentences reporting relevant statistics.
c. Is there a significant difference between at least two racial groups in the number of residences during the last year free? Write a couple of sentences reporting relevant statistics.
d. If such a difference exists, between which groups? Write a couple of sentences reporting relevant statistics. - In a paragraph, provide an interpretation for these results (i.e. why do you think we found what we found?)
