Question: This test comes from Topic #4 which is to compare the neck size and chest size of female bears. This will involve two tests, one on the neck size and another on the chest size. In this example, I’ll do the test for the neck size.

Neck Size Test

Past research indicates that the mean size of the chest of female bears in a certain area of a national park in the United States is \(\mu =18.02\). However, a biologist believes that the, due to nutrition and other factors, the current population of female bears is larger than the past research indicated. To begin research, the biologist took a random sample of 19 female bears and conducted a hypothesis test.

\(\begin{aligned} & \text{The hypotheses are: }\mu =18.02 \\ & \text{ }\mu >18.02 \\ \end{aligned}\)

The sample data is given in the table to the right:

Neck 18 22 21 20 18 10.5 17.5 12 19 18.5 17.5 21 28 26 21.5 15 23 15 13
Chest 31 35 41 38 31 32 29 19 32 35 31 34.5 48 48 40 27 44 28 23
