[Solution] In a small study, 16 breast cancer survivors who underwent chemotherapy were compared to 26 breast cancer survivors who did not undergo chemotherapy.
Question: In a small study, 16 breast cancer survivors who underwent chemotherapy were compared to 26 breast cancer survivors who did not undergo chemotherapy. Blood samples were taken from each woman and the levels of Interleukin 6 (IL-6), which is a marker of inflammation, were measured. The mean (SD) for the women who had chemotherapy was 2.4 (SD=1.5) and for the women who had not had chemotherapy the mean (SD) was 1.5 (SD=0.88). Conduct the appropriate test to assess whether mean IL-6 is the same for the population of women treated with chemotherapy compared to women who do not receive chemotherapy. You must hand-calculate all steps of the test (but may use Stata to calculate a p-value or critical value) and write a sentence summarizing the result of the test in the context of the problem.
