Question: A chemical company produces mastics and caulking for the construction industry. The product is blended in large mixers and then pumped into tubes and capped. Management is concerned about whether the filling process for tubes caulking is in statistical control. The process should be centered on 8 ounces per tube. Several samples of eight tubes were taken, each tube was weighted, and the weights are recorded.
You can access worksheet containing this data (so that you do not have type it into a worksheet) here.
- Assuming that only six samples are sufficient, develop control charts for the mean and the range.
- Plot the observations on the control chart and comment on your findings. The design specification calls for upper and lower tolerance limits are 8.6 and 7.4 ounces, respectively.
- What is the capability of the process? What is the probability of producing a defect?
