Question: Bear gallbladder is used in Chinese medicine to treat inflammation. Due to the difficulty of obtaining bear gallbladder, Chinese medical researchers are searching for a more readily available source of animal bile. A study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology examined pig gallbladder as an effective substitute for bear gallbladder. Sixty mice were randomly divided into two groups: 30 were given a dosage of bear bile and 30 were given a dosage of pig bile. All the mice then received an injection of croton oil in the left ear lobe to induce inflammation. Four hours later, both the left and right ear lobes were weighed with the difference (in mg) representing the degree of swelling. Summary statistics on the degree of swelling are in the table below. Assume normality and construct a 95% confidence interval to determine if there is a difference in the effectiveness of the two different sources of bile. (10 points)
Sample Size Sample Mean Sample Standard Deviation
Bear Bile Pig Bile 30
30 9.17
9.71 4.17
3.33
Random Variable Weight
Reliability Coefficient:
( -2.4903, 1.4103 )
Conclusion There is no difference
Why? The 95% confidence interval contains 0.
