Unit 4: Univariate Analysis of Variance, Two Factor ANOVA

This week's assignment requires the analysis of data using a two-factor ANOVA. As with the previous unit assignment, you should use the format and organization shown in the unit 3 model example . Of course, it will have to be appropriately adapted for the factorial ANOVA.

The data for this exercise was supplied by Howell, but originally associated with a study by Thomas and Wang published in 1996. The file is available on the Howell CD as ex17-1.sav, or see the unit 4 datafile . The data is described in Chapter 17, Exercise 17-1. This study focused on verbal learning and memory and employed the number of words recalled as the dependent variable and strategy (key word generated, key word provided, and rote learning) and time delay (either 5 minutes or 2 days) as the independent variables.

SPSS Hints

To run a factorial ANOVA in SPSS

  • Go to Analyze / General Linear Model (GLM / Univariate .
  • Move the independent variables into the Fixed Factors box and the dependent into the Dependent box.
  • Leave the default for Model (the full factorial model).
  • Use plots to produce graphs of the results.
  • Select Post-Hoc Tests for factors that have more than two groups.
  • Select the options you want (descriptives, effect size, power, etc.).

Note that the distribution of the dependent variable (to verify assumptions such as homoscedasticity and normal distributions) should be examined by group for each independent variable.
