Stroke is a leading cause of disability among adults in developed countries. Improved functional outcome
Stroke is a leading cause of disability among adults in developed countries. Improved functional outcome of therapy can reduce the burden of disease on the individual, the family and society. As rehabilitation is recognised as the corner stone of stroke care you are interested in the effect of Augmented Exercise Therapy Time (AETT) consisting of a combination of physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy on activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with stroke.
You conduct a study with a random sample of recently diagnosed stroke sufferers, randomise them into an intervention and control group and assess those relationships. The intervention group will receive 60 minutes of combination therapy each day, the control group will receive standard care of 30 minutes of therapy each day.
In your study you assess the following parameters:
- Age
- Gender
- Study group
- Modfied Barthel index score (ranging from 0 to 100 ) at the beginning and end of therapy
- Stroke severity score was assessed at the beginning of the study using the NIHSS instrument
The data of the 30 participants of your study are provided in table format on the extra page of your assignment. This table contains the following information:
Task 4
You hypothesised that with increasing age the change in ADL score decreases.
- Decide on the appropriate statistical procedure. Justify your choice.
- Draw an appropriate graphical display with SPSS.
- Perform the appropriate statistical procedure with SPSS. Interpret the results.
- Does your data support or reject the null hypothesis? Justify your answer.
- What is the expected change in ADL score of a person with an age of 55 and 70 ? (4 marks)
Task 5
You hypothesised that there is a relationship between gender and age.
- Decide on the appropriate statistical procedure. Justify your choice.
- Perform the appropriate statistical procedure with SPSS. Interpret the results.
- Does your data support or reject the null hypothesis? Justify your answer. (2 marks)
Task 6
You hypothesised that there is a relationship between the severity of stroke as categorised (NIHSScat) into: $\leq 6=$ mild to moderate; $\geq 7=$ severe
and gender.
- Decide on the appropriate statistical procedure. Justify your choice.
- Perform the appropriate statistical procedure with SPSS. Interpret the results.
- Does your data support or reject the null hypothesis? Justify your answer. (2 marks)
Task 7
You hypothesised that the intervention group's Barthel index improved more than that of the control group.
- Decide on the appropriate statistical procedure. Justify your choice.
- Perform the appropriate statistical procedure with SPSS. Interpret the results.
- Does your data support or reject the null hypothesis? Justify your answer. (3 marks)
