Overview and Purpose
The General Social Survey (GSS) was begun in 1972 by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago, and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the purpose of studying and monitoring social change and the increasing complexity in American society. The purpose of the GSS is to collect ongoing data on important trends, attitudes, attributes, behaviors, and activities in American society in order to increase understanding about social change; the structure and functioning of society; the emergence, organization and changes in social groups; the relevance of certain attitudes and behaviors to social change; and to develop a multifaceted perspective of American culture. The GSS aims to for this data to enable to examination and explanation of the United States´ culture and society in relation to other societies so that cross-national models of society can be developed and the United States can be placed in perspective in comparison to other current societies. The GSS further aims to collect and maintain this data so that it may be easily accessible to those for whom is serves a relevant purpose, such as policy makers, scholars, students, and other groups for whom increased understanding about American society serves a meaningful goal. The GSS seeks to utilize the expertise of professional scholars and researchers to maintain high quality data that is accessible at a minimal cost and waiting time.
