Statistics Project

Must provide a brief introduction to the study, the relevant assumptions associated with that statistical test and whether they were met, discuss the variables, and describe the descriptive statistics and their significance. Data table(s) and normality plots should be provided as appropriate. In the results section, you must describe the hypothesis testing situation, conduct inferential analysis, provide a summary and discuss conclusions. See the sample provided.

Linear Regression

L ozapine (Clozaril) is a medication utilized to treat psychosis and has been shown to have significant cardiac risks, including tachycardia (rapid heart rate). This effect has also been demonstrated to differentially affect women versus men, putting women at greater risk of heart related complications secondary to the utilization of clozapine to treat schizophrenia. Caffeine, as a stimulant, has also been demonstrated to increase heart rate, suggesting that patients on clozapine may be at increased risk of tachycardia, and consequently cardiac and psychiatric problems (e.g. increased anxiety) associated with rapid heart rate. Utilizing a multiple linear regression method, analyze the association between caffeine intake and gender in a sample of participants being treated for schizophrenia with clozapine. A community based sample of participants (n = 99) randomly obtained from a registry of clozapine users*. Blood tests examined both clozapine levels as well as caffeine intake measured by theophylline assays, a metabolite of caffeine that provides reliable estimation of caffeine intake. Participants included persons identifying as males (n = 57) and females (n = 42), who were predominantly European American (n = 63), followed by Black/African-American (n = 17), Latino/Hispanic (n = 10), Asian/Asian-American (n = 7), and Native/First Peoples (n = 2). As a component of analyzing the association of clozapine dose, caffeine, and gender on heart rate, provide the linear equation expressing the relationship of predictor variables to the outcome variable. Discuss implications based on your results. * Use of clozapine requires regular blood draw to assess neutrophil (white blood cell count) and heart rate, so the ability to access a reliable sample is increased over other types of medications.
