About Your Data Set:

The data you have been provided is a subset of information gathered during an undergraduate research project conducted within the Applied Psychology Laboratory of East Tennessee State University between the years of 2004 and 2007. All data was collected as self-report measures using an online data collection system.

Your data set includes composite scores for 80 participants on measures of four personality traits (Locus of Control, Neuroticism, Openness to Experience, Agreeableness), and two demographic variables (Sex, Undergraduate Class Ranking). For the Locus of Control measure, higher scores indicate a more external locus of control (stronger belief in chance/fate, acceptance of events being out of one’s control); accordingly, lower scores indicate a more internal locus of control (stronger conviction that one’s fate is in their own hands, and not left to chance). For the other three personality traits, higher scores indicate more of each trait (e.g., neurotic individuals have higher neuroticism scores than non-neurotic individuals).

Part A: Getting the Data Ready

Using the data assigned, set up a database and enter the data for analysis. Name the data file using the format "LastNameFirstInitial_FormA". For example, my data file would be saved as "ChumneyF_FormA.sav".

Part B: Analyze and Interpret Your Data

Suppose you have recently read a scientific article in which the authors claim that women are both more open to experience and more agreeable than men. Conduct independent t tests to compare men and women on each of these variables.

Identify the null and alternative hypotheses that were tested for each variable. Then, calculate the estimated Cohen’s d effect size and r 2 for each significant t test. Provide a detailed interpretation of what the results of these analyses mean.

Based on your experience with the scientific literature in this field, assume that you expect locus of control to be related to neuroticism and agreeableness. You also expect class ranking to be related to locus of control and neuroticism. Investigate these hypotheses using the appropriate correlation statistics (Pearson r or Spearman rho , as appropriate).
