SPSS PROBLEMS

  1. Use the 2002 GSS file to investigate whether or not Americans have at least two children per person. Use the One-Sample T Test procedure to do this test with the variable CHILDS. Do the test at the 0.01 significance level. What did you find? Do Americans have two children, more, or less?

(4) The GSS includes a measure of political party affiliation (PARTYID). Test whether there is a significant difference between strong Democrats (coded 0) and strong Republicans (coded 6) in their age (AGE), number of children (CHILDS), and educational attainment (EDUC). Assume alpha is .05 for a two-tailed test. Prepare a statement to summarize your findings.

(6) Sociologists Bellas, Ritchey, and Parmer conducted an analysis of the gender gap in faculty salaries. Data consistently indicate how women faculty members earn less than their male counterparts. Differences have been attributed to individual difference, as well as employer and institutional discrimination. For their analysis the sociologists obtained salary data on 158 men and 148 women from a large public research university. In 1985, men were estimated to earn an average of $42,340.62 (S y = 9,639.19), while women earned $33,865.98 (S y = 8,298.82).

  1. Use the t test to conduct a one-tailed test of the null hypothesis, \(\alpha =0.05\), comparing male salaries to female salaries. What can you conclude?
  2. Would your conclusions have been different if you had used a two-tailed test?
