Analysis of Variance/Covariance

A number of recent articles as well as numerous Fielding Institute dissertations have attempted to understand the relationship between fathers and their children. This exercise is designed to explore that relationship using a new set of scales that assess "father presence" (Krampe & Newton, 2007). (The article describing these scales in greater detail is attached.) You will be provided with an SPSS database that contains information from a sample of adults who completed the "Father Presence Questionnaire" and well as demographic information describing the participants. Your assignment is to answer the research questions below using analysis of variance and analysis of covariance techniques.

The database is named "PSY717ANOVA.SAV" and is described on the attached list of variables. We are interested in understanding the relationship between family structure, race/ethnicity and two of the Father Presence scales, "Feelings About the Father (sflf)" and "Attitudes About the Father (satf)." The article describing the scales provides ample evidence for the reliability and validity of the scales and this is something you do not need to explore in your analyses. The questions you should address are as follows:

  1. Are feelings about the father and attitudes about the father different among different race/ethnic groups and are these differences, if any, related to the family structure in which the respondents grew up?
  2. One of the father presence scales addresses the mother’s support for the relationship between the respondent and his or her father. This is the "Mother’s Support for the Relationship with the Father" scale (smaf). Redo your analyses in #1 above using this scale as a covariate. Provide your interpretation of the meaning of the results of this analysis.

YOUR APPROACH

  1. Begin by examining the characteristics of the variables involved in your analyses. Does it appear that the data has been cleaned appropriately and missing values defined? Are the scales normally distributed? If not, is it necessary, in your opinion to modify the data in any way, such as transforming the data or deleting outliers?
  2. Run the analyses as indicated in #1 & #2 above.
  3. Provide a complete write-up of the results in APA format providing all necessary tables, also in APA format ( NOT just SPSS printout). Make sure that you understand the nature of any interaction effects and the effect of including the covariate.

GOING FURTHER

You will notice that there are a number of other variables available in the database. Feel free to continue your exploration of this data using these other variables. If you find something interesting, you may choose to include this within your presentation.

NOTE

The data is proprietary and may not be used for any other purpose than this exercise. Thanks!
