Study description:

Research has shown a connection between state anxiety, which is situation specific, and trait anxiety, which is a more enduring intra-individual variable. A researcher wants to study the relationship between these two variables and develop a prediction equation for predicting state anxiety from information on trait anxiety. Twenty participants are gathered and measured with two scales, one for state anxiety and one for trait anxiety. Both scales are interval in nature, with higher scores reflecting greater amounts of anxiety. The data were as follows:

Subject Trait Anxiety
(predictor)
State Anxiety
(criterion)
1 43 54
2 51 45
3 93 99
4 23 27
5 65 62
6 55 72
7 98 91
8 73 78
9 88 83
10 94 95
11 83 75
12 62 52
13 65 47
14 77 81
15 93 92
16 45 25
17 72 54
18 63 53
19 62 71
20 63 81

Task: Predict state anxiety (criterion) from trait anxiety (predictor).

In doing this, make sure to create a scatterplot for the data. Run the linear regression. While running this, create the following charts to help answer these items.

  1. Histogram of the standardized residuals.
  2. Normal probability plot
  3. Scatterplot of residuals vs. predicted criterion values (plot of residuals).
  1. Report on whether the following assumptions of linear regression have been met and explain why you would say each assumption was or was not met. (4 pts)
    1. Linearity. Is it met, how do you know this?
    2. Independenceof residuals. Is it met, how do you know this?
    3. Normality of residuals. Is it met, how do you know this?
    4. Homogeneity of variance of residuals. Is it met, how do you know this?
  2. Using data from the SPSS output, present the prediction equation ( 2 pt s )
  3. Report and interpret (name and explain) the following values:
    1. a in the equation (1 pt )
  • b in the equation (1 pt )

  • c. the correlation between the variables (1 pt )
    d. coefficient of determination (1 pt )
  • Report on the significance of r-squared (use α = .05)
    1. State the null and the alternative hypotheses using statistical notation.
      (1 pt )
    2. State the null and alternative hypotheses in your own words
(what are they saying?) (1 pt )
    3. Report the following values (2 pts)
    • R 2 =
    • F observed =
    • F critical =
    • Significance (p) value:

This means that the test is significant.

    d. Write 1-3 sentences describing the results in terms of: (2 pts)

    • Your hypothesis testing conclusion
    • How you came to this conclusion

    5. Report on the significance of the slope (use α = .05)

    a. State the null and the alternative hypotheses using statistical notation.

    1. pt )

    b. State the null and alternative hypotheses in your own words

(what are they saying?) (1 pt )

    c. Report the following values (2 pts)

    • b =
    • β =
    • t observed =
    • t critical =
    • Significance (p) value: p

    d. Write 1-3 sentences describing the results in terms of: (2 pts)

    • Your hypothesis testing conclusion
    • How you came to this conclusion

    6. Write a short paragraph as it might appear in a journal, noting what was done in the study and the results in terms of your two tests of significance. (3 pts)
