SPSS Assignment

  1. Open SPSS > Open Data > Go to your source and Open the Excel data file: SV_GasConsumption
  2. There are 50 observations on Gender (Men and Women); Gasoline Tax (cents); Per Capita Income (PCI); Location (City, Suburb, Town); High Way Miles driven; Gas Consumption and Age.
  3. Since Gender and Location are string variables, you need to recode them as numeric values. So RECODE Gender into (0 and 1). RECODE Location. For example, you may make Town, Suburb and City as (0, 1, 2) respectively. You can make any one as the base category.
  4. Go to ANALYZE and run a Linear R egression of
    GasConsumption = f [ X1, X2, X3,….. ]
    Where X1, X2, etc. are variables of your choice. Not all variables may be significant. Your modeling skills will be tested in choosing the variables and interpreting them correctly.
  5. Type your regression equation on a paper along with R 2 , F-value, standard error of the estimate (SEE) and t- ratios in parentheses underneath your coefficients (as seen in your practice questions). I do not want SPSS output or syntax.
  6. Type your interpretation of goodness of fit measures and statistical significance of estimated coefficients.
  7. Explain your results in a few words with respect to each [variable] coefficient. For example how gas consumption would change if gasoline tax is increased (decreased) by 1 cent. Explain your dummy variables with reference to your base category, for example, how Men differ from Women in terms of Gas consumption.
