Results
The main purpose of the analysis is to assess whether or not the odds of having complications are affected significantly by the BMI of a subject, when controlling for age and comorbidities. For the purpose of this analysis, as new Complication variable was recoded to be 0 = No complications, 1 = Complications. The variable BMI is measured at the interval level, and it is also given at the ordinal level, but it will be used at the interval level for convenience in the analysis and completeness in the analysis. The age variable is measured at the ratio level, and the Comorbi dities variable is measured at the nominal level, with 7 categories.
For the purpose of this analysis and simplicity of interpretation, the comorbidities variable will be recoded into variable that is 0 = None, 1 = Yes (otherwise, 6 dummy variables would need to be created in order to account for each specific comorbidity, which would decrease the number of degrees of freedom in the analysis. A logistic regression model needs to be estimated, in order to predict the odds of having complications based on the subject’s BMI, age and existence (or lack of) comorbidities.
