There are two parts to your assignment. Please do both parts. Please submit only one Word document, 20 pages maximum; copy and paste from SPSS into Word. Do not submit your SPSS outputs.
Both parts require that you find a data set on your own to analyze. It’s OK to use the same data set for both parts, if you can find one that lends itself to both kinds of analysis.
Part 1: Find a data set to analyze that provides an opportunity to use the General Linear Model ( GLM ). You may consider data sets included with SPSS or on the Field site or you may search the web for interesting data. There are many available; the library staff knows how to access them, and there will be a workshop on this subject organized by the DBA students group on June 29.
Here are the minimum specifications:
- An interesting topic
- At least 100 cases
- At least two categorical variables used in your analysis
- At least two scalar variables used in your analysis
- At least 8 independent variables in total in your analysis
- It has to be real data, not made up
- Use the 'transform' or ‘recode’ option in some way, such as reducing a categorical into fewer categories, for example; converting a scalar into a categorical; creating a logarithmic transform; creating a combined variable from some of the original variables; or some other kind of transform or recoding of at least one of the variables.
- Give the variables clear and useful names; give meaningful labels to the values of the categorical variables. Make sure your output tables are clear and easy to read.
- Use graphical output in some way to augment your explanation.
- Explain the meaning of your results so I know you can interpret the SPSS output correctly.
- Be sure to know the real meaning of the data, including the directionality (e.g. does ‘2’ mean more of something than ‘1’, or less), and make sure your writing shows that you do.
