Part I
Research suggests that romantic background music increases the likelihood that a person will offer his or her phone number to another he or she has recently met (Gueguen & Jacob, 2010). In this study (using artificial data), women and men spent time in a waiting room with background music playing. In one condition, the music was a popular love song and for the other condition the music was a neutral song. The participant was then moved to another room in which he/she was instructed to discuss two food products with another person. The other people were part of the study and were selected because they had been rated as average in attractiveness. The experimenter returned to end the study and asked the pair to wait alone for a few minutes. During this time, the actor used a scripted line to ask the participant for his/her phone number. The following table presents data similar to those obtained in the study, showing the number of men and women who did or did not give their numbers for each music condition.
Your goal is to determine if there is a significant difference between the two types of music and the number of people that give their phone numbers
The table I provide you with only gives observed frequencies, use SPSS to determine the expected frequencies and fill those in to the table below
-
Put the number next to the observed frequency in parenthesis and a different color
Willingness to give phone number ( N=80 ) - Test if there is a significant different between music and phone numbers given with α=.05. Use Cramer’s V to measure the size of the effect. Write your findings in a paragraph using APA-style formatting. Include the appropriate descriptive statistics. Do not forget to get creative in your report and include what we can infer about the general population using these findings.
Part II
Research has demonstrated strong gender differences in teenagers’ approaches to dealing with mental health issues (Chandra & Minkovitz, 2006). In a typical study, eighth-grade students are asked to report their willingness to use mental health services in the event they were experiencing emotional or other mental health problems. Typical data for a sample of n =75 students are shown in the following table:
Yo ur go al is to determine if the data show a significant relationship between gender and willingness to seek mental health assistance
- The table I provide you with only gives observed frequencies, use SPSS to determine the expected frequencies and fill those in to the table below
- Put the number next to the observed frequency in parenthesis and a different color
Willingness to Use Mental Health Services ( n =75)

2. Test if there is a significant different in gender and willingness to seek mental health help with α=.05. Use Cramer’s V to measure the size of the effect. Write your findings in a paragraph using APA-style formatting. Include the appropriate descriptive statistics. Do not forget to get creative in your report and include what we can infer about the general population using these findings.
