Group Assignment "Boosting Magazine Sales"
Group Task:
What cover design and display would ensure sales of the ‘Sport & Brain’ magazine? To answer this question you assigned at random 60 supermarkets to the two styles of covers and two display locations and recorded the number of magazines sold in a one-week period.
Group Question: Identify the factors affecting the sales of the magazine and make suggestions to your client on the best cover design and display location.
Use the following questions as a guide when formulating your response. Include detailed answers to these questions along with figures, tables and/or equations, if necessary, into the Technical Note of your report:
- Describe the data presented in the "Data" worksheet.
- What is your response variable? Factors? How many levels each factor has? How many observations are in each group? How many total observations are in the sample?
- What are groups’ averages and what is the total average for the whole sample?
- Estimate the size of the main Cover and Display effects. You may use "Display and Cover Main Effects" table located in the "Data" worksheet. Enter group averages into the blue box cells B36:C37. Do not change values in other cells!
- What was the difference between average sales of magazines with Blue&Red and White-Black covers?
- What was the difference between average sales for magazines displayed at supermarket check-out lines and displayed near the entrance to the store’s parking lot?
- Estimate the size of the Cover-Display interaction effect. Is there any sizeable interaction effect? Is Blue&Red cover attractive even in the parking lot and White&Black cover id not appealing even at the check-out line?
- Estimate two-way ANOVA model for the sales’ data. Use 0.05 alpha and 15 rows per sample.
- Navigate to your individual question . At this step, each student in your group will test different hypothesis about main and interaction effects. This is an individual assignment; however, its results are important for success of your group assignment. Therefore, start working on it as early as possible. Ask for the help of your group members if needed.
- Compare the results of your individual questions. Discuss as a group how two cover designs and two displays affect the magazine sales? Select the cover/display combination that increases sales the most and make suggestions on the promotion of the magazine.
