Homework Assignment 3

Exercise A

In this exercise, you are going to test determine whether there is a relationship between a respondent’s race and his or her assessment of whether or not prostitution is wrong. As part of reaching your answer, you are going to show the various steps involved in manually calculating chi-square. You will also conduct the analysis using SPSS, to check the accuracy of your data. As part of your manual calculations, round everything to 1 decimal place.

  1. What is the null hypothesis? (2 marks)
  2. Step 1 – complete this table, based on the example that was provided in lecture.
Hint 1: Only some the cells will have data.
Hint 2: Change the Title and Variable Labels before you print this table.

    Variable 1 Label
  3. Step 2 – complete this table, based on the example that was provided in lecture.
Hint 1: All of the cells will have data (except the yellow cell).
Hint 2: It may be easier to cut and paste the table as you go. Its up to you.

    Variable 1 Label

  4. Step 3 – complete this table, based on the example that was provided in lecture.
Hint 1: You will need to use the formula for comparing expected and observed counts.

    Variable 1 Label
  5. What is the value of the chi-square statistic for this analysis?
    Answer __________
  6. Use SPSS to conduct this same analysis, and print the output.
  7. What is the value of the chi-square statistic for this analysis?
    Answer __________
  8. What is the probability associated with the chi-square statistic?
    Answer __________
  9. Is the value of the chi-square statistic for this analysis statistically significant?
    Answer __________
  10. Evaluate your null hypothesis and explain your findings (3 marks).

Exercise B

Select two nominal and/or ordinal variables that were not analyzed in Exercise A, and conduct a chi-square analysis.

Note 1: if you have not saved the variables that you created in earlier assignments, you may need to recreate a variable to do this exercise.

Warning: please make sure that the relationship you decide to test makes sense. Don’t just randomly select two variables.
