Exploring and Predicting Things about the World via Bivariate Regression
As we see from the readings and from the videos from Week 5, the logic and application of bivariate regression provides a way to explore and predict things about the social world in a systematic way. The activities of systematically exploring and predicting leads to the generation of knowledge. This knowledge could be the confirmation of a theory (or an aspect of it), or it could be an adjustment to a theory (a correction or a refutation), or it could be new pioneering work that brings new insights and ways of thinking about conditions and/or processes in the social world.
With those goals in mind, h ere’s what I want you to do in HW3 :
- Think about an issue in your area of study and write an hypothesis that succinctly provides the overall vision for your exploration and prediction of a relationship between two key factors / variables.
- Use any of the class data sets and SPSS to develop your exploration and to test your hypothesis .
- Use SPSS to produce 1) a correlation table or multiple correlation tables, 2) a scatter plot or multiple scatter plots or a matrix plot, 3) a bivariate regression or multiple bivariate regressions, and 4) a homeoscadastic plot(s).
- Interpret all statistics in the tables and graphs from both a technical and substantive point of view. Find the narrative(s) revealed in the statistical findings and articulate it clearly using both your technical understanding of what the statistics mean and your common sense and contextual knowledge of what they mean substantively. That is, you want to demonstrate that you understand what the statistics mean technically and to demonstrate that you can link the technical to the context in a substantive way.
