Effect of Type of Therapy on Client Outcome and Satisfaction A therapist was interested in the effects

Effect of Type of Therapy on Client Outcome and Satisfaction

A therapist was interested in the effects of type of therapy (psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, brief counseling) and client gender (male, female) on clinical outcome (Client Global Assessment of Functioning [GAF]) and service satisfaction (Client Satisfaction Questioner [CSQ] scores. The data for this study thus can be described as a 3 X 2 between subjects factorial design.

For the clinical outcome measure GAF, the therapist predicted differences among the therapy groups, but no differences between the two genders. The therapist also predicted no interaction between Type of Therapy and Gender for the outcome measure.

For the assignment, focus on the Client Satisfaction Questioner [CSQ] measure.

The therapist predicted differences in satisfaction among the three treatment conditions. And more specifically, that the clients would be more satisfied with Brief Counseling versus more prolonged Cognitive-Behavioral and Psychoanalytic therapy.

No difference between genders in satisfaction was predicted. Also, no interaction between Type of Therapy and Gender was predicted.

  • Data bearing on this hypothesis is presented in SPSS save file Therapy & Outcome.

1. Descriptive Statistics: Examine the descriptive statistics; simply examining these statistics, do the data appear to support the hypothesis?

2. Factorial ANOVA: Do a statistical test (ANOVA) to determine whether the observed sample mean differences arose by chance.

  • State the Statistical Hypotheses Tested by Your Analysis (include any and all extra credit hypotheses, if conducted).
  • Evaluate Assumptions: State the assumptions underlying the ANOVA test and present empirical evidence [focal CSQ measure] and justification for the use of the test.

4. Stand Alone Results Summary: Report the results of the ANOVA and interpret the findings as they relate to the research hypothesis. Do not forget to include the appropriate, descriptive statistics, effect sizes, and graph(s) that support your argument. Make sure to incorporate any extra credit analyses into your summary.

What can you conclude from your results? Were the predictions supported by these data?

5. Extra Credit [ only do extra credit if the basic assignment itself is expansive in its content.

  • Multiple Comparisons : focus on individual cells and not on the main effects.
  • Factorial Anova : Conduct and include in your report, an analysis of the GAF scale scores.
  • Examine and report the correlation between the GAF and CSQ scores . Make sure to include these results in the reporting results summary.
