Emotional depression is a widespread phenomenon affecting people in all walks of life. There exist many treatments for depression, ranging from psychotherapy to medical administration of antidepressant compounds. Many studies have compared the efficacy of various treatments of depression. Several years ago, NIMH conducted a large, multistage, coordinated study of treatment for depression. Each treatment was carefully defined and carried out using a detailed manual covering every aspect of the treatment, the theory involved, how to deal with specific problems, and so on (Elkin et al. [1989] National Institute of Mental Health treatment of depression collaborative research program. Archives of General Psychology , 46 :971-982.

Patients with additional psychiatric disorders or other problems were excluded from the study and those with clinical depression [before treatment data is not included in the file], as measured by the Hamilton D were included in the study. The SPSS data file, treatment sample size is set to 60, was generated based on the means and standard deviations reported by Eikin et al.).

Four Treatments for Depression

  • CBT Cognitive Behavior Therapist: the therapist helps the patient correct negative views of themselves, the world, the future, and maladaptive beliefs etc.
  • IPT Interpersonal Problems Therapist: the therapist helps the patient to Identify Interpersonal problems.
  • IMI-CM Imipramine Control: Imipramine, a reference or standard pharmacotherapy known to alleviate clinical depression. (Double Blind)
  • PLA-CM Placebo Control (Double Blind)

Midterm I Questions 1 & 2

1. Use SPSS to examine the center, spread, and distribution shape for the Hamilton Depression Index scores for the Placebo and Therapy Treatment Condition. Make sure to annotate your printouts copiously and with technically correct statistical terminology or usage. Show that you understand the statistics and graphs as they describe the center, spread, and distribution shape of the HAM-D scores in the two treatment groups.

2. Write a stand-alone summary of your descriptive statistics and graphical results. Compare the Hamilton Depression scores for the Placebo and Treatment Condition and interpret them as they relate to the effectiveness of the Treatment Condition versus Placebo + case management. A good summary will consist of from 1 – 3 pages of text with supporting statistics and will include at least one figure or table.]

3. Extra Credit . Use SPSS to investigate the research question, "did the patients remain clinically depressed after therapy, or did the therapy induce or produce remission (HAM-D ≤ 7)"? Evaluate the presence of absence of clinical depression after treatment for both of your treatment groups. When addressing this question, only use statistical methods we have studied in this course to date.
