Computer Project

This project will give you the opportunity to apply the analysis methods of descriptive statistics to sets of data. You will collect data, analyze data, and write a project report. Spelling, grammar, and the overall quality of your written work will be taken into account for your grade.

Complete the following using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

  1. In paragraph form, describe your first topic. You may choose any topic you wish as long as it involves quantitative data (numbers) of some kind. Also, identify the relevant population and possible samples needed to address some question of interest relating to your topic. Next, obtain data in order to address your question of interest. Collect a sample related to your question of interest where the sample size (n) is 40 or more by conducting a survey. Remember, the data must be quantitative as the term is defined in the text, so for whatever survey question you ask, the answer must be a number. In paragraph form, describe how you obtained your data, including the phrasing of the question you asked and how you conducted your poll ( e.g. asked friends, family, coworkers, went to a mall, chat rooms, etc.).
  2. For your quantitative data: (Microsoft Excel)
    1. Provide a list of your original data. This should be a list of at least 40 numbers.
    2. Create a frequency distribution table. Include relative and cumulative frequencies.
    3. Create a histogram using the frequencies found in part (b).
    4. Create a Stem and Leaf display.
    5. Create an Ogive.
    6. In paragraph form, describe what you have found and write any conclusions you could draw based on the tables and graphs you have created to describe the data.
  3. In paragraph form, describe your second topic. You may choose any topic you wish as long as it involves qualitative data (categories) of some kind. Also, identify the relevant population and possible samples needed to address some question of interest relating to your topic. Collect a sample related to your question of interest where the sample size (n) is 40 or more and there are at least 4 different categories . Again, you must obtain your data by conducting a survey. In paragraph form, describe how you obtained your data, including the phrasing of the question you asked and how you conducted your poll ( e.g. asked friends, family, coworkers, went to a mall, chat rooms, etc.).
  4. For your qualitative data: (Microsoft Excel)
    1. Create a frequency table for your categories. Include relative frequencies.
    2. Create a Pareto Diagram.
    3. Create a Pie Chart.

d. In paragraph form, describe what you have found and write any conclusions you could draw based on the sample you have collected and analyzed.
