HW assignment 1
- For this assignment you will model, run and substantively interpret a bivariate regression.
- You will use the immig.sav data set and SPSS. See relevant measures below.
- Your DV is going to be opposition to allowing immigrants in one’s country , and it will be composed of a scale averaging questions d4, d5, d6, d7, d8, d9. The indicators are attached below.
- The sample comes from several European countries (you can treat it as a representative sample of Europeans in 2003).
- Your independent variable will be level of religiosity .
- Notice that both measures are not nominal (they are ordinal), and may be considered as approximately interval due to the number of the categories they hold. We will discuss the importance of level of measurement in regression when we cover the model’s assumptions.
- Please attach the SPSS output and syntax at the very end of the assignment so that I can check your computer work. In case you run a few experimental regressions do not attach everything, just give me the output of the measures and regression you report.
-
a) What is the research question?
b) Write a brief introduction explaining why this phenomenon/question is politically interesting and important to study (a paragraph will do).
- Write a theory of why and how religiosity should affect the extent to which people are opposed to allowing immigrants to their country (a couple of paragraphs).
- State your research hypothesis very clearly and simply, as well as the corresponding null hypothesis. Specify the direction of the relationship – positive or negative.
- Create the scale for the DV. Name it "opsimmig". Report its reliability coefficient.
- Discuss the descriptive statistics of the DV and IDV you will use in your analysis (e.g. frequencies, mean, etc.): building on these statistics, what can you say about opposition to immigration in the European population? about religiosity ?
-
a) Use SPSS to estimate a regression model using your single independent variable.
b) Substantively interpret the regression results.
Make sure to refer to the following questions:- What is the regression equation in this case (that is, how would you compute the value of the DV for a given level of your IDV of choice)?
- What will be the predicted value for the DV for the maximum level of religiosity? For the minimum level of religiosity?
- What do the coefficient estimates tell you about the relationships you hypothesized about and the effects of the independent variable on the dependent variable? Be specific, and refer to both the intercept and the slope. What does the significance test for the slope tell you?
- What does your R 2 value tell you about the estimated model as a whole? The F test?
