Chapter 14
-
A researcher is evaluating the effectiveness of a speed-reading course. A standardized test measuring both speed and comprehension was given to sample of n=15 students before the course started and again at the end of the curse. The following table presents the results from the repeated measures ANOVA. Fill in the missing values in the table.

2pts)
Source SS df MS Between Subjects _____ _____ Within Subjects _____ _____ Session _____ _____ 12 F=______ Error 42 _____ Total 86 _____ - A repeated measures experiment comparing two treatments can be evaluated with either a t-statistic or an ANOVA.
| Subject | Trt 1 | Trt2 |
| 1 | 2 | 4 |
| 2 | 1 | 3 |
| 3 | 0 | 10 |
| 4 | 1 | 3 |
- Use a repeated- measure t statistic with =.05 to determine whether the data provide evidence of a significant difference between the two treatments. (1pt)
- Use the repeated- measures ANOVA with =.05 to evaluate the data. (1pt)
- What can you conclude about the relationship between the t statistic form (a) and the F-statistic from (b) (1pt)
3 . An habituation task is often used to test the memory for infants. In the habituation procedure, a stimulus is shown to the infant for a brief period, and the researcher records how much time the infant spends looking at the stimulus. This same procedure is repeated again and again. If the infant begin to lose interest in the stimulus (decreases the time looking at it), the researcher can conclude that the infant "remembers" the earlier presentations and is demonstrating habituation to an old familiar stimulus. The data for such an experiment is presented in table 3
| Amount of time ( in seconds) Attending to the Stimulus | |||||
| Infant | 1st Presentation | 2nd Presentation | 3rd Presentation | ||
| A | 112 | 81 | 20 | ||
| B | 97 | 35 | 42 | ||
| C | 82 | 58 | 27 | ||
| D | 104 | 70 | 39 | ||
| E | 78 | 51 | 46 | ||
Use an ANOVA with =.01 to determine whether there is a significant change in behavior for successive presentations. (2 pts)
Compute the 2 to measure the effect sizeof the presentations. (1pt)
4. To demonstrate the practical uses of basic learning principles, a psychologist with an interest in behavior modification designed a study on the impact of teaching self-care skills to severely developmentally handicapped children. He randomly assigned and equal number of children to each of three groups, treatment group 1, treatment group 2 and a control group. Group I received reinforcement for activities related self-care. Group 2, received an equivalent amount of attention but no reinforcement and the control group received neither reinforcement nor the extra attention. The children were scored (blind) by a rater on a 10-point scale of self-sufficiency. The ratings were done in a baseline session and at the end of training. The data is provided in table.
| Control | Baseline | 3 | 5 | 8 | 5 | 5 | 6 | 6 | 6 | 3 | 4 |
| Training | 4 | 5 | 6 | 6 | 4 | 7 | 7 | 3 | 2 | 2 | |
| Trt GP1 | Baseline | 8 | 5 | 3 | 5 | 2 | 6 | 5 | 6 | 4 | 4 |
| Training | 9 | 7 | 2 | 7 | 9 | 7 | 8 | 5 | 7 | 9 | |
| Trt GP2 | Baseline | 3 | 5 | 8 | 2 | 5 | 6 | 6 | 4 | 3 | 5 |
| Training | 5 | 5 | 10 | 5 | 3 | 10 | 9 | 5 | 7 | 5 |
- State the design that applies to the problem and using SPSS, run the appropriate analysis of variance. When reporting the results, summarize the results from the different portions of your SPSS output in one table. The summary should look like Table 14.3 (c), or 14.4 (c) etc. in Howell whichever you find to be relevant. ( 3 pts)
- Plot and comment on the results (2 pts)
- Include a diagram illustrating the breakdown of the total variation (SS) and the corresponding degrees of freedom (include the actual figures both both) into the various sources that account and do not account for the total variation. ( 2 pt)
- Write out in words (or statistically) the main hypotheses being tested in this problem. (2 pts)
- State your final conclusions, how you reached those conclusions (i.e., what stats you used etc.). I am looking for more than just significant or not significant results. ( 3 pts)
