Description of the Methodology

The research question of this study is if whether or not certain subpopulations are more likely to receive the death penalty. For the purpose of answering the research hypothesis, an observational, non randomized, retrospective design has been used.

A collection of datasets obtained from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) was used to compile appropriate data required to perform several hypothesis tests related with the research question. Specifically the datasets were collected from the following webpage from the BJS website: http://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=tp&tid=18#data_collections . This is the collection that contains varied information and tabulated data on capital punishment. More specifically, information about capital punishment and various demographic information such a geographical region, race, gender and education level is compiled in the datasets provided by the Bureau of Justice Statistics collection.

Different statistical tests were conducted. The data will presented graphically, depicting trends and regression analysis will be used to quantitative assess those trends. Also, various descriptive statistics will be computed. Due to the nominal nature of most of the data involved with this research, various Chi-Square tests for independence and goodness of fit were conducted.

Statistical Analysis

The first analysis in this section has to do with a comparison of prisoners that are sentenced to death and those prisoners that are executed. First of all, a time series graph is shown depicting the sentences to death and executions since 1953 in the US.
