(Solved) #1 Market Penetration The following data gives the - #80169
#1VCR Market Penetration
The following data gives the market penetration of (percentage of households that own) VCRs in the U.S.
Year %
1978 0.3
1979 0.5
1980 1.1
1981 1.8
1982 3.1
1983 5.5
1984 10.6
1985 20.8
1986 36.0
1987 48.7
1988 58.0
A. Plot the data. There clearly must be a limiting value since there will never be more than a 100% of the homes that own VCRs.
B. Formulate a model that assumes maximum market penetration of 70%.
C. Test you model by plotting the predictions against the data.
D. In what year will maximum penetration be attained? What percentage of households would you expect in year 2000?
#2 Track design
The track coach needs your help designing a new six-lane, 400m, running track. The straightaways should be 105 meters. You need to determine the radius of the each semicircular end of the track and the widths of each of the six lanes. You also need to identify the locations of the staggers so as to make the track fair to all runners no matter in which lane they run.
Specify your assumptions such as the width of each lane and from where measurements are being made. Give the formulas used and calculations.
#3 Retirement planning
Set up a model to estimate the amount of money you (or a fictitious person) will need in retirement and estimate the monthly contributions needed to achieve the desired retirement. Variables to be estimated include current age, expected retirement age, life expectancy, monthly expenses when retired adjusted for inflation, expected Social Security income, expected retirement income, investment return, rates of return on contributions and retirement funds, etc.
