The attached data is from a study looking at the effect of Active Support training on both client and staff outcomes. The keyworkers for the service users in 12 group homes were interviewed - six of the homes had taken part in Active support training and 6 had not. There are data for 48 service users (and consequently 48 members of staff).

Using the data provided, which you will need to enter into SPSS, examine the hypotheses that:

  1. the service users living in homes where staff have been trained in active support will have better outcomes in terms of higher engagement in meaningful activity, less frequent challenging behaviour and less severe challenging behaviour than those in houses where staff were not trained
    AND
  2. staff who have been trained in active support will report greater job satisfaction, more role clarity and better support from the rest of staff team and management than those who have not had active support training.
The following elements must all be included:
    1. Presentation of descriptive statistics
    2. Justification and calculation of appropriate inferential statistics using SPSS.
    3. Presentation of results
    4. Interpretation of result in terms of the hypotheses and any conclusions that can be drawn or limitations to the findings.

Hints

  1. Remember to think about what analysis you need to do before you enter the data in SPSS.
  2. Each hypothesis requires more than one analysis.

Key to variables:

  • Engagement levels: number of minutes spent engaged in meaningful activity during a two-hour (120 minute) observation period.
  • Challenging Behaviour 1: severity of challenging Behaviour as rated by staff - i.e. in terms of the management problem posed by the behaviour: 1 = severe challenging behaviour, 2 = lesser challenging behaviour, 3 = no challenging behaviour and 4 = potentially serious challenging behaviour.
  • Challenging behaviour 2: number of incidents of challenging behaviour (any typology/severity) recorded on one month's ABC charts.
  • Role clarity: as measured by a specifically designed questionnaire, 1) asking staff to rate on a scale of 1 to 5 how clear they were about their roles as a carer in learning disability services (5 = very clear about what was expected of them every day, 1 - not at all clear about what their job actually involved). 2) They were also asked to rank a series of tasks in terms of importance to their role as carer. An average ranking above 3 = "doing with" ideology, a ranking of below 3 = "doing for" ideology.
  • Job satisfaction: staff were asked to rate on a scale of 1 to 5 how satisfied they felt with various aspects of the job. E.g. tasks they were expected to do, level of input into service and service user outcomes, level of support from management, level of support/teamwork with colleagues, satisfaction with job conditions, etc. The scores presented are 1) the total score over all 10 questions and 2) the mean of the ratings on the two items for support from management and support from colleagues (on a scale of 1-5).
