The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a rule that power plants can use river water to cool generators so long as the discharged water is on average no more than 140 degrees. To determine if the Coop’s discharged water is in compliance the EPA took 81 different samples over a three week period. They found that the mean was 142.5 with a standard deviation of 4.5 degrees. At the .05 level of significance write the null and research hypotheses and find out if the Coop’s discharged water is in compliance with EPA rules.
