Question: Identify the appropriate statistic for the following scenarios (State Ho, H1, & a or the Independent and Dependent variables when appropriate.

a. A study was designed to compare the amount of jersey sales per year for the Detroit Lions with Cleveland Browns. The researcher wanted to see if he could show, with high confidence, that the average number of yearly jersey sales for the Browns was lower than the Lions.

b. A study for a local smoking ordinance obtained data from both parents and non parents regarding whether they were in favor of or opposed to the ordinance. There was interest regarding whether there was a relationship between parental status of the voter and their preference on the smoking ordinance.

c. A marketing researcher was interested in determining the criteria that people use when choosing a restaurant. The researcher selected a sample and asked each person to select what they considered to be the “most important factor in selecting a restaurant” from a list of alternatives (cost, quality of food, and atmosphere). On the basis of the data, the researcher wanted to determine whether there was a preference among people looking for a restaurant.

d. Thirty (thirsty) people were selected randomly to participate in a special test of a new soft drink. Participants were given a soft drink that was made using the “old” recipe. After drinking it, participants rated the “tastiness” of the beverage. Next, the participants were given a second soft drink that was made using a “new” recipe. Again, participants rated its “tastiness”. The goal was to determine whether the new recipe was statistically more “tasty” than the old.

e. A study was done on the amount of rainfall (measured in inches) in the Mid-Ohio Valley and amount spent for repair of water damage (in dollars) for various years. The goal was to use the data to predict the amount spent on repairs for certain rainfall levels.
