Question: The Brazelton Neonatal Behavior Assessment Scale (BNBAS) is used to assess infant’s adaptive behavior to external stimuli. The Brazelton Institute writes: “The Scale, (sic) looks at a wide range of behaviors and is suitable for examining newborns and infants up to up to (sic) two months old. By the end of the assessment, the examiner has a behavioral ‘portrait’ of the infant, describing the baby's strengths, adaptive responses and possible vulnerabilities. The examiner shares this portrait with parents to develop appropriate caregiving (sic) strategies aimed at enhancing the earliest relationship between babies and parents” (quotation taken from www.childrenshospital.org/brazelton/intro.html). Researchers, using the BNBAS, have found that babies born under normal conditions show improvement in behavioral performance within the first 10 days of their lives. To determine whether premature babies show similar patterns of improvement within the first 10 days of their lives, a sample of 15 premature babies born approximately one month before their due date was subjected to the BNBAS hours after birth and again 10 days later. BNBAS scores for these babies are shown below. Do these babies also display gains in behavior within a 10 day period? (Note higher scores indicate better behavior.)
